So I was at Claytor Lake Aquatics Base with Eric, who just turned 13 years old on Sunday, and I came home for a 1-day business trip. It was Wednesday, August 6th. My mom's birthday.
Lisa handed me a thick brown envelope. "This came from FedEx for you." Department of the Army, Human Resources Command...hmm. Perhaps these were the orders to attach me to Virginia Tech Army ROTC . Nope- as a member of the Individual Ready Reserve, I was being called to active duty to support Operation Iraqi Freedom! Well, that's interesting. I'm not sure that these are actually valid for a number of reasons:
I'm an unusual soldier, to say the least. I've been in the IRR since 1992. I'm current on my training and schools, but it's been over 16 years since I've been in an MTOE unit.
I've been pursuing a more permanent attachment to VT, with a training unit that actually has ROTC reserve slots. I've been doing it for free, or nearly free: just points toward my retirement.
It's been 19 years since I was comissioned. Getting close to that magical 20.
It says I'm attaching to a medical unit out of San Antonio. That's what my brother does: he's a shrink and trains at Sam Houston all the time. Maybe they got the wrong Major Bass!
OK. Well, at least the report date isn't until October 5th. I can pursue this after my trip to discuss Zero3 Refrigeration Controls web services.
